What A Week!

Where did this week go?

We have had a very busy week at Preemie Proud this week. We have fulfilled several custom orders & a few of them were larger than usual.

Our micro preemie inventory has taken a hit this week as well. You may notice this weekend that we have no micro preemie short sleeve diaper shirts in stock. We apologize and will be working to restock a few of these next week. Also, our micro preemie hat selection has been depleted this weekend. We will begin Monday morning working to replace those as well.

Next week will be even busier as we strive to restock our inventory and provide as many options for our preemie parents as possible.

As the last few years, Preemie Proud will be offering NICU friendly micro preemie Halloween costumes and preemie Halloween costumes for our premature baby customers. We Are Preemie Proud!!

Last night was amazing!

We watched as our former 29 week micro preemie danced her heart out in front of an auditorium full of people.

Yes, that's right! Our daughter, Braleigh, performed in the annual dance recital for her dance studio last night. She performed in three dances during the matinee recital and two dances during the evening performance. As her parents, we are so proud of her and how far she has come since birth. She is a far cry from the premature baby who came 11 weeks early, but she was right on time last night!!!

Braleigh also was selected to be a member of the 2010-2011 Dazzler Competition Team. She has competed in several competitions this season and has worked very hard. Again, we are so very proud of her and all she has accomplished this year and over the past 7 yrs. She has come so far!!

Way to go baby girl! You are awesome and we love you with all our hearts!

Another School Year Almost Gone For Our Former Preemie

Can you believe that the end of the school year is upon us. There are only 5 1/2 school days left in the 2010-2011 school term for our daughter Braleigh who is a former 29 weeker. How time flies!

Braleigh has had a marvelous first grade year and truly loves her teacher. The last day of school will be hard on our daughter as she will miss her friends and familiar faces. What a year it has been! Not only has Braleigh succeeded in her first grade curriculum, she was also tested for the Talented and Gifted Program. She scored high enough on her testing to be accepted into the TAG program while in the first grade. Part of her year was spent with pull out services as she went to a third grade class room for reading. Braleigh is quite the reader! She has already scored over 206 AR points this year for the Accelerated Reader Program and has loved every minute of it!!! Not only does she read, but she reads well above grade level. Our former 29 weeker is reading on at least a 4th grade level!!

As many of you may have been told by your doctors and neonatologist, preemie babies do often have speech delays, physical delays, or learning disabilities. This is statistically true. However, NOT all of them do! Set obtainable, high expectations for your child. Work with them when they are small and give them every opportunity you can for them to succeed. Again, NOT all preemies will come away from their prematurity with a host of problems. There is hope!!!

We did it!!!

All of our wonderful Preemie Proud team completed the 6 mile March of Dimes: March for Babies Walk on Saturday (even our littlest members)!! A special thank you to everyone that walked with us and helped support the March of Dimes in their effort to continue doing research to help premature babies everywhere. If your community is having March of Dimes walk, I encourage each of you to get involved and honor of your preemie!.

Tomorrow, April 30th, our Preemie Proud Team will be walking in our local March of Dimes: March for Babies Walk in honor of all the premature babies in our lives.

Our team will have 3 former preemies walking with us. These are (my daughter) Braleigh, (my sister) Ashley, and a cousin. We are also walking in memory of "Angel" twin boy cousins born at 21 wks. Prematurity as effected our family in many ways over the years. I told our local March of Dimes coordinator that luckily we have had many success stories and only a heartache or two.

So if you are in our local area and want to walk with us, contact me at crystal@preemieproud.com . Our team is about 30 members strong, but we will be more than willing to welcome more people!

Micro Preemie Prayer Request

We received this prayer request early this morning...

"Bobby and Clete - Both boys were born on February 8th at 25 weeks 2 days. They have been fighting strong in the NICU, but Clete is battling a PDA and Bobby complications from a grade 4 brain bleed. Mom and Dad are hoping that both boys can avoid surgery. Please pray... for the boys and for Mom and Dad."

It is that time of year again, Preemie Proud is preparing to participate in the 2011 March of Dimes Walk.

We are in the process of building our team and have already had several people agree to walk with us. We will be walking in honor of all of our Preemie Proud babies and in honor of my daughter, Braleigh, a former 29 weeker.

Look for a March of Dimes Walk in your area and walk for these tiny miracles.

Catching Up!

Well, let me start by saying this year has already started out as a blur. It is already the middle of February and each day seems to go faster and faster. Where does time go?

For all of our preemies, their days are spent in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit until they are strong enough to make the transition to life at home with their families. I am so happy to report that we have already had a couple of premature babies graduate from the NICU this year and they are thriving at home. As for the other wonderful babies that we have the pleasure to hear about and follow their progress, they are making great strides each day. Sometimes there are "little bumps in the road" so to speak...but that is all part of being born too early and having to struggle to each day to learn what some folks say are the "normal things". Examples: breathing, regulating body temperature, bottling and nippling....the list goes on and on for our sweet preemies. So in short, we are so very proud of our Preemie Proud babies! Way to go! Keep Growing!

For the parents of premature infants in the Neonatal Unit, these last couple of months and weeks have been both emotionally and physically stressful. Several of our parents have had to return to work and find themselves trying to balance family, work, and visits to the NICU all at the same time. We are constantly thinking of our parents and trying to support them on our Preemie Proud Facebook Page. Luckily, some of our parents have spouses and other family members that are currently helping to balance out their life with a preemie. Even the moms that recently have taken their pre-term babies home find themselves doing the balancing act - work, other children, household chores, and now their preemie's care. Sometimes a NICU grad goes home with medical equipment, a list of medications, and many doctor appointments to keep. To all of our new parents that find themselves in this position, please know that you are not alone and there are other parents that are going through the same preemie journey as you. Also, there are many of us that have been through the NICU journey ourselves and would love to help support you through your preemie experience. Business News - As some of you already know, after the first of the year, Preemie Proud moved full-time to our commercial location. This allows us to have more room for production of premature baby clothing and other great preemie accessories. As with any move, there are still "kinks" to be worked out and we are dealing with them as they come up. So far, the move has been a wonderful experience. We have been able to up our production rate and have several new items to be listed on our website http://www.preemieproud.com/ . Some of you have asked if we have a storefront now. Unfortunately, we do not have a store front at this time that is open to the public. We are using our commercial location for production purposes only. BUT...you can still find our wonderful micro preemie clothes and preemie clothing online at our website Preemie Proud . Be sure to look at the daily featured items located on our homepage.

Way to go babies!

I am so proud of all of our preemie babies! As the new year begins, I hear of all the amazing babies that are fighting so hard each day. Every milestone and all progress is such an amazing thing that should be celebrated. On our Facebook page, I create milestone graphics for our babies as they hit a new stage in their NICU journey such as weight gain, off the vent, moving to an open crib, etc. Our goal is to support each baby and their family as they make their way through the NICU- one step at a time. We celebrate each tiny step as they go! Join our facebook family and help us celebrate!

Christmas Poem

Jolly Old St. NICU

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and in each isolette

Little creatures were squirming and getting all set;

Machinery sat by their bedsides with care,

In hopes that good breathing skills soon would be there.

Day shifters were home all snug in their beds,

As visions of overtime danced in their heads;

While preemies on ventilators, and some on CPAP,

Had just settled down for a long winter's nap...

When out in the hall there arose such a clatter,

The residents woke up to see what was the matter.

Away from the sink I flew like a jet

To make sure all was well at my baby's isolette.

Some bilirubin lights with their powerful glow

Gave the lustre of mid-day to babies below,

When, there before my wondering eyes, it would seem,

Was an oversized stroller and a medical team.

With a handful of needles with which they could stick you,

I knew in a moment it must be St. Nicu.

More rapid than eagles his specialists came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

"Now, Nurses! Now, Residents! Now, Neonatologists!

On, Social Workers! On, Respiratory and Occupational Therapists!

From the front of the unit! To the end of the hall!

Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

Up to each baby's cribside they flew,

With the stroller full of toys, and St. Nicu too.

And then, in a twinkling, they stopped at each bed

And tucked in the babies and got them all fed.

As I looked at my baby, and was turning around,

Down our aisle St. Nicu came with a bound.

He was dressed in red scrubs, and I could instantly tell

That his clothes had an obvious hospital smell;

A bag of stuffed animals was flung on his back,

And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

A little red pen he held tight in his teeth,

And a stethoscope encircled his neck like a wreath.

He was chubby and plump, with a few extra pounds,

And I laughed when I saw him there doing his rounds.

A turn of his clipboard and a twist of his head

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke few words, but came straight to my side,

And running down his face was a tear he had cried.

And laying his hand on the back of my head,

He gave me a nod, and slowly he said:

"Each night you come here you're aware of the danger,

But your baby is loved by the One in the manger."

Then the medical team gave a thumbs-up and smiled

And St. Nicu placed an animal next to my child.

But I heard him exclaim, as they rolled out of sight,

"Merry Christmas, tiny baby, and have a wonderful night!"

I am in awe of the amount of fundraisers I have seen listed for today in our local area and on the internet. March of Dimes Chapters across the US are hosting special events as well as businesses and individual families. The out pouring of support is amazing!!! Events range from students passing out Awareness Bracelets, to Bowling for Babies, Donating Crocheted Hats to hospitals, Restaurant Fundraisers, etc. Thank you for your willingness to support such a worthy cause. Prayer for Baby Girl - Olivia Rose

We received this prayer request today...

Please pray for our baby, Olivia Rose. She was born at 34 weeks due to a rupture in the amniotic sac. She has never been on a ventilator, but has problems coordinating eating, breathing and swallowing. We are scared every time we feed her because she stops breathing and the hospital will not release her until she takes all of her bottles with no issues. She also stops breathing when she's sleeping. Please pray for us. We are burdened beyond belief and we have a 17 month old son who needs our love and care, too. We have no one to help us; it's just me and my husband. Thanks.

Please take a moment to remember this sweet baby in your thoughts and prayers. As many of us know, the NICU is a roller coaster ride and these parents could use our support at this time.

Born at 25 weeks 1lb 8 oz

His mom shared this story...

After a week in the hospital on strict bedrest, it was found that I had a placental abruption and had to be rushed to the ER for an emergency C-Section. It was the scariest day of my husband's and my life. Not only had I lost a lot of blood, but we knew this baby was going to be here way too early. We held our breaths as the doctor pulled our son from me. Our little miracle let out a tiny cry; we couldn't believe our ears. Little Sidney was born just before 10am on July 3rd at only 25 weeks old. He weighed a mere 1lb 8oz. As he was whisked away to the NICU, we knew were going to be starting a new journey...and a difficult one.

It's week 4 for Sid in the NICU. Our little fighter is still on a ventilator, but is being put on additional supplements to help get him weaned off of it. He's eating breast milk via a tube like a champ, up to 17ml every three hours and is currently weighing in at a whopping 2lbs 2oz!! I couldn't be prouder of my little boy.

Way to go Sidney!

Wonderful Nurses!

During our NICU stay with our daughter, we were blessed to have terrific nurses. Each of them differed in personality and years of experience, but most of of them had heart and lots of it. I remember them so fondly when looking back. Of course we had our favorites ( like most NICU parents do). The ones you feel more comfortable around. The ones that you feel relieved when you see them on duty. Those are the nurses that make the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit a little more bearable. These are the people that often times go forgottened or unmentioned when all is said and done. Being a Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse takes a special individual! Our hats are off to them.

As most of you know, Preemie Proud is a family owned and operated business. We strive to be your preemie source for clothing and accessories while maintaining that "Mom & Pop" feel that provides superior customer service, quality products and lots of heart!

However, when tragedy strikes close to home, it effects not only our family but our business indirectly. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience that our weekly shipping schedule has caused anyone and for the currently low number of products in inventory.

My uncle has terminal cancer. So..we have closed up shop during the day to be with family and to help in anyway possible. I am personally coming in at night to fill the orders that were placed throughout the day. Please be patient with us as we work through this with our family. Because our family, like your own, is very important to us we have made these temparary arrangements.

I have had the honor of growing up in an extremely close knit family and would not change that for the world. But duty calls and we must go!

CPSC Warning (Consumer Product Safety Commission)

Good evening everyone! I was reading a couple of articles that were written over the last couple days about the use of baby slings for babies under 4 months old. The CPSC has issued a Suffocation Hazard warning stating parents of preemies, twin, low birthweight babies and babies in fragile health should use caution when using slings and should consult with their pediatricians before doing so. This warning comes during an investigation of at least 14 infant death over a 20 year period.

A Valentine Wish!

This year is quickly slipping by. We have already made it to the February! And of course, February wouldn't be complete without Valentine's Day.

For us, my husband and I, our "Valentine" continues to grow and blossom before our eyes each day! She is six..going on 16! Braleigh is excelling in school, performing above grade level in reading and math and loving school as a whole. I volunteer in her classroom at least once a week and it amazing me to watch each child, their different personalities and how they interact with each other. Braleigh is a friend to all, quiet, sweet and very helpful to her classmates. I am so proud of her!

A Grandmother's Prayer Request

Two weeks ago on January 23rd, my daughter, Lori had her baby 3 months early due to preeclampsia. The baby, Brayden, weighed 1 lb. 10 oz. He is still with us but has had to have two blood transfusions because of low white blood cell counts. He now weighs 1 lb. 14 oz. but is having difficulty breathing and is on a cpap machine. November is Prematurity Awareness Month®!

Join the fight for preemies and help the March of Dimes®!

Unfortunately, we all know someone or have heard of someone that has had a preemie. You may be a preemie parent yourself. November 17th is the day to reach out to preemies everywhere and join the fight.

According to the March of Dimes®, prematurity rates are have been steadily rising over the last 20 years and continue to do so today. We know that a premature birth can happen to any pregnant woman. One in every 8 babies in the USA are born too early and face an increase risk of medical complications, long NICU stays, lasting disabilities or even death.

What we continue not to know is how to prevent premature births from happening in the first place. One organization that it making stride in that area is the March of Dimes®. Professionals, volunteers, advocates, etc. are all working to find ways to help these pre-term babies. Can you be a part of the fight? Of course, go to the March of Dimes homepage http://www.marchofdimes.com/ and volunteer or donate to the cause.

If you are pregnant or thinking of getting pregnant, the March of Dimes® has a whole section dedicated to women with signs of preterm labor, ways of reducing your risk, and things to think about during pregnancy.

Parents of preemies that are NICU residents now can check out their "Parenting in the NICU" section of families and continue to use the resources once your child is at home. Having been through the NICU experience personally, we know that it can be very stressful for parents. The roller coaster of emotions, good days and bad days, unanswered questions and uncertainty can take their toll. The Parenting Section is a great resource for parents.

Share your story! The March of Dimes® gives you a way to share your story with others. Create a blog or post to the online community for NICU Parents. There are others that are traveling the same road that you are and can help.....or just listen.

Holidays are Coming!

Each year since the birth of our daughter, our family has been making "goody" bags to take to the families of preemie babies that are in the NICU on Christmas morning. The first couple of years we did these bags personally. In the last few years, we have started providing "goody bags" a couple times a year (including Christmas still) from our business Preemie Proud & of course, Braleigh. She is the reason we do all of this!!!

The response we receive from the NICU staff and parents who receive our goodies are overwhelming. Parents are so grateful that someone has remembered their child on Christmas morning. Emails and phone calls usually follow the next few days. The NICU staff always welcome our donations.

So.....once again, we are preparing for our (15) Annual Christmas NICU Tote Bags. Each year they seem to grow. We are hoping to include items such as preemie size clothes (our NICU usually doesn't have tiny, tiny babies), preemie hats, mitts, socks, blankets, photo albums, lotions, hand sanitizer, snacks, bottle water, mints, notebooks or journals for parents to record milestones and other important information, etc......the list can go on and on.

We are reaching out to our community this year for assistance to help make this years' bags better than ever.

Talking to parents of preemies over the last few years has allowed us to compile of list of useful items that moms and dads have received (as gifts) for their premature baby while in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Micro Preemie Clothes - Are They Needed or Not?

As a mom, to a former micro preemie, my answer to this debated question is simple. YES! YES! YES! Micro Preemie NICU Clothing is needed! (for a few reasons)

Most micro preemie babies spend their first few days on warming bed and then transfer to an isollete or incubator as they become more stable. So technically, these tiny premature infants do not have to have clothes and often cannot be dressed during the times they are unstable, requiring constant medical care and access. Therefore, warming beds and incubators help the premature baby to keep their body temperature a little more regulated. Does this seem like a contradiction to my answer above? It isn't....read on.

As micro preemies become more stable, most Neonatal Intensive Care Units will allow new parents to dress their babies as long as their health allows. For anyone that has not personally been through the emotional NICU Journey, I'm not sure you can fully understand the roller coaster ride parents take while watching their new baby struggle each day for the very life you want so desparetly for them to have. Each day you struggle with not being able to provide for your child, like not being able to hold them, change them, bath them or feed them at will. Waiting and watching....You feel HELPLESS! But one day, you walk into the Neonatal Unit and your baby has made a milestone! (Milestones are huge in the NICU) He or she is stable and strong enough to be dress. As a parent, you can now bring in tiny hats or NICU friendly clothes for your preemie to wear. And...if you are lucky, you may get to change them or dress them during your daily visits. You may also be allowed to bring blankets, socks, and booties for them. What a day! A milestone is reached, your new little angel is stronger AND you now have something that you (as parents) can actively take part in. You can be a part of your child's day to day care!

So the first reason micro preemie clothes are needed is simple: THE PARENTS! It means so much to be able to dress your child! it may be the most emotionally important reason of all!

Even though these tiniest preemies often are in incubators to help regulate their body temperature, NICU clothing, hats, booties and socks may help infants to hold onto some of their body heat.

If you have a family member or friend with a new micro preemie, clothing would be an excellent gift. It will do a world of good for the parents!

How do you know what to buy? Look for NICU Apparel that is hospital friendly and nurse friendly. These garments are easier for the medical staff to use. They often allow quicker access to premature infants by having Velcro® closures or snaps.
